Orthodontics to straighten teeth is now recognized as an important and everyday treatment for reasons other than aesthetic concerns alone. The correct dental position creates a stable jaw joint which means an even distribution of force around all teeth in the mouth.

Why straighten teeth?
Orthodontics may be used purely to straighten teeth due to crowding, wear, excessive overbite, over-jet, deep bites, open bites or even crossbites, however in other cases it may be used to correct a skeletal abnormality.
When to start orthodontic treatment?
Braces are usually placed at around 12-14 years of age. Other appliances such as myotherapy (see below) may be required at an earlier age to encourage growth or expansion, your dentist will advise on required treatment.
Early assessment is vital.
It is vital to have your child assessed early, particularly if you have any concerns regarding positioning of teeth or shape of the jaw or you notice lots of mouth breathing. Orthodontic treatment generally takes an average of 24 months to complete, however in cases of minor crowding, treatment time may be considerably less.
Preventative Hygiene Care.
While receiving orthodontic treatment it is very important to care for your tooth and gum health by having your teeth professionally cleaned and examined every 6 months, combined with good oral home care this is an investment in your new smile.

MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY
Myofunctional Therapy for Children.
Myofunctional Therapy is the use of orthodontic appliances to correct concerns with oral structure in children much earlier than previously done.
Have you noticed your child:

has crooked or misaligned teeth

mouth breathing

their Jaw jutting forward or receding

snoring

they thrust the tongue forward to the roof of the mouth at rest or during speech
If you have noticed any of these points or have other concerns, the earlier you seek advice from your dentist the better outcome.
Assessment is in-house.
The assessment is done in-house and if needed your child will be provided with specifically designed orthodontic appliance to suit their particular need.
Typically these appliances are only worn for a a few hours during the day and all night.
Education.
You and your child are educated on a series of exercises to retrain the muscles and tongue to allow them to correct their swallowing and / or breathing.
Compliance is the key to success.
A major factor in the success of a myofunctional appliance is compliance and individuality; it is not predictable how well your child's teeth and jaw may respond.
As the first phase toward teeth and jaw correction, it is often followed with fixed braces to complete the process.
